Kehrschliefe - 'Kehrschliefe Vol 1'

In my frequent meanderings around the internet looking for new music, I occasionally stumble across a site or a label or an artist and think "yeah!" Very recently I was contacted by a lovely gent called Andy who offered me the digital preview files of the latest releases on his Misophonia label. I investigated and hell yeah! I then learnt that this recent batch of releases were to be his last...hell no! I didn't pry too much as he seemed pretty gutted talking about it but it would seem Brexshit  has a lot to do with it - it really is the gift that keeps on taking. Anyway, in this recent batch is this absolute peach of an album by Kehrschliefe. The name rang some very distant bells then I remembered they (he) had had a single on the mighty Polytechnic Youth label way back and further investigations revealed that Kehrschliefe is actually Allan Murphy, the bod behind the wonderful Midwich Youth Club.

What we have here is a pseudo concept album (not that rancid Rick Wakemen type of concept album); it sees Murphy redirect his music under the guise of Wolfgang Tilner-Barlow, a "DDR Radio Engineer/Musician that made Jingles/Themes/Incidental music for East German TV/Radio in the 60/70’s who defected to West Berlin and might or might not have been involved in DDR state covert operations till his death.”  If you are au fait with the Kosmischer Läufer project then you have pretty much have the idea, but... this is better! Murphy creates a genuine seventies atmosphere with some delightful analogue sounds that skilfully mixes this retro vibe with a contemporary feel. If Kraftwerk had a sense of humour they would have sounded like this.

I am aware that this current vogue for all things retro and analogue (dare I mention the hauntology word?) throws up many, many albums etc and one needs to pick and choose carefully but 'Kehrschliefe Vol 1' is a superlative example... it has a certain something that lifts it above many others. (Did mention the humour? song titles like 'Jizz Roboten' reveal some of the twisted thinking behind this project)

Needless to say I have ordered a tape and I would gently encourage everyone to have a listen....if you like it, buy it. Links are below.   Andy from the label  mentioned that if anyone is just after the digital version to buy it from the artist's site (again, link is below).  Unusual to see such largesse in this cut-throat  world eh? Also,  maybe check out all the goods on offer at Misophonia before it disappears forever.
